The Wizard of Oz has struck a chord that resonates in the deepest recesses of our hearts. Dorothy and her three companions, have a particular stimulus driving them to reach the Emerald City. Each of them wants something and believes the Wizard of Oz is the one who can give it to them. The Scarecrow, is seeking a human quality he feels he is missing; intelligence, the quality he feels is most critical to his being complete. Scarecrow, from the moment he is seen by Dorothy hanging on a pole in the fields, being harassed by crows that do not respect him as they should, and his inability to accurately tell Dorothy which way to the Emerald City; he presents himself as less than brilliant. Yet even with his clumsiness and apparent lack of a brain, he is the one who directs them to Oz, he devises the plan to escape the Wicked Witch, and his fear of fire does not stop him from going to the aid of his companions. He is the cleverest of the four companions, only he does not realize it, or believe it until he is given “proof” by the Wizard in the form of a distinguished diploma. Like most of us, he needed that added reassurance that we are better than we believe; as did the other companions who received their “heart”, and “courage”. The Wizard believed in the Scarecrow’s talents so much, that he made him ruler of Oz. For the four companions, their journey to Oz symbolizes the thought: Trust in yourself, and make the most of your talents and your own resourcefulness, rather than sitting around wishing “if I only had this or that”, be satisfied with home, family, and those you love and love you in return.
