The Munchkins are a delightful part of Dorothy’s story In the Wizard of Oz. They believe the girl “who fell from a star” is a heroine and wish only to grant her one wish; to go back home. While they have no magic of there own, they know the Wizard in Emerald City can help her, for he is the great and powerful OZ. As they sing to her and bring her gifts they are applauding her saving them from the Wicked Witch of the East. They are the only ones who live in Oz that Dorothy interacts with who are totally positive and happy from the start. The innocence of children is reflected in these colorful inhabitants of Oz.

For those of a certain age the film the Wizard of Oz was the first movie we remember where the difference between black and white and color films became obvious. As we watched as Dorothy tries to save her beloved pet Toto from the mean old lady on the bike in the dreary stark land of Kansas. Her ordeal of being trapped in the house by the twister, and her being knocked about to awaken in a place no one had ever seen before; the Wonderful Land of Oz.
As she steps out into this place of brilliant colors and giant flowers we hear the whispers and the giggles; the peek of a face and then the bubble appears and out steps the epitome of perfect goodness, Glinda the Good Witch. She tells Dorothy the Munchkins have sent for her because the Dorothy killed the Wicked Witch with her house. Then she tells the Munchkins it is OK to come out. For the first time we see the little people in their bright costumes, painted faces and happy smiles. Their high voices are like nothing we have ever heard; as they sing and dance we know we are not as Dorothy said; “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore; we must be over the rainbow”. The Munchkin Coroner comes out and proceeds to announce the Wicked Witch is not only dead, she is really truly dead.
The Munchkin Mayor offers Dorothy an award for saving them from the Witch, and the Lollipop Guild sings her a song. As Dorothy seeks to find the Wizard the Munchkin Woman tells her “Follow the Yellow Brick Road”. We love the Munchkins because they are the true characters who call this beautiful place home. Their sweet innocence and bright colored characters tell us this is a place where things are different from home, not all things are good, but most of them are fun. You can bring these wonderful characters to life on Halloween as you dress in one of the many characters from Munchkin Land in the Wonderful Land of Oz.
