The Cowardly Lion seeks the Wizard in order to find his courage. Yet along the way, on the trip down the yellow brick road he constantly reacts in a brave way in unpleasant situations, he does not hesitate to take action in the face of fear. Like many of us he mistakenly believes that courage requires fearlessness, instead of the true capability of doing what is necessary in spite of our fears. For all children have a fear deep inside about what happens when they are away from home; like the first day of school they must learn that new places mean there will be new friends to help along the way, and Like the Cowardly Lion, they learn that acting like a bully does not make you brave, standing your ground in spite of your fears is the true meaning of courage; and every time they succeed in facing a fear, they earn their own Badge of Courage!

In the Wonderful Land of Oz, we first meet the Cowardly Lion when he jumps out of the forest and knocks down Scarecrow and Tin Man. He is growling and aggressive, and Toto, Dorothy’s treasured pet, (trying to keep Toto, was why Dorothy came to Oz in the first place) begins to bark and snaps at the Cowardly Lion.
When the lion tries to hurt Toto, Dorothy slaps the Lion, and calls him a coward, the Lion quickly turns into a crying, meek King of the Jungle. He admits he is a poor lion, because he has no “courage”. He joins the troupe and becomes the third new companion to join Dorothy on the Yellow brick road in the eventful journey to reach the Wizard, where Dorothy is convinced the Cowardly Lion can be helped to find his courage.
The Cowardly Lion is a splendid companion for Dorothy; he always comes to her aid, and does what is required to make it to the Wizard. In the castle of the Wicked Witch, he may be whimpering, but he is a brave adversary to the Witches minions. The Wizard of Oz is loved because the characters tell us they know how we feel, and that is OK, because in the end we will find our courage and be alright. For those who love the cowering bravado of the Cowardly Lion, putting on a Cowardly Lion Costume and bringing this King of the Jungle to life is a delightful way to celebrate Halloween.
