In the Wonderful Land of Oz, we first meet the Cowardly Lion when he jumps out of the forest and knocks down Scarecrow and Tin Man. He is growling and aggressive, and Toto, Dorothy’s treasured pet, (trying to keep Toto, was why Dorothy came to Oz in the first place) begins to bark and snaps at the Cowardly Lion.

When the lion tries to hurt Toto, Dorothy slaps the Lion, and calls him a coward, the Lion quickly turns into a crying, meek King of the Jungle. He admits he is a poor lion, because he has no “courage”. He joins the troupe and becomes the third new companion to join Dorothy on the Yellow brick road in the eventful journey to reach the Wizard, where Dorothy is convinced the Cowardly Lion can be helped to find his courage.

The Cowardly Lion is a splendid companion for Dorothy; he always comes to her aid, and does what is required to make it to the Wizard. For those of a certain age the film the Wizard of Oz was the first movie we remember where the difference between black and white and color films became obvious. As we watched as Dorothy tries to save her beloved pet Toto from the mean old lady on the bike in the dreary stark land of Kansas. Her ordeal of being trapped in the house by the twister, and her being knocked about to awaken in a place no one had ever seen before; the Wonderful Land of Oz.

As she steps out into this place of brilliant colors and giant flowers we hear the whispers and the giggles; the peek of a face and then the bubble appears and out steps the epitome of perfect goodness, Glinda the Good Witch. She tells Dorothy the Munchkins have sent for her because the Dorothy killed the Wicked Witch with her house. Then she tells the Munchkins it is OK to come out. For the first time we see the little people in their bright costumes, painted faces and happy smiles. Their high voices are like nothing we have ever heard; as they sing and dance we know we are not as Dorothy said; “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore; we must be over the rainbow”. The Munchkin Coroner comes out and proceeds to announce the Wicked Witch is not only dead, she is really truly dead.

The Munchkin Mayor offers Dorothy an award for saving them from the Witch, and the Lollipop Guild sings her a song. As Dorothy seeks to find the Wizard the Munchkin Woman tells her “Follow the Yellow Brick Road”. We love the Munchkins because they are the true characters who call this beautiful place home.
